1 quote, 1 stat, 1 tip & 1 tool for telling great stories
1. Stat
Stories in advertisements drive 11% more purchases compared to ads without stories. — Lien, N. H., & Chen, Y. L. (2013)
2. Quote
“Statistics make you think. Stories make you act.” — Ann Wylie, writing coach
3. Tip
Let me tell you a story …
One guy got run over by a boat and had to learn to walk again. The second guy had an amusing interaction at a department store.
Which guy won the National Speakers’ Association’s Last Story Standing competition in Denver last week?
The second guy, the one with the so-so story, won.
Why did he win — and how can you write a winning story? Here’s what the judges suggest:
- Start in the middle of the story. The winner started with a comment someone made while he was shopping. He didn’t start by deciding it was a good day to shop.
- Step out of the story to speak to the audience. The winner brought the message home to the audience two or three times in a five-minute story: Have you ever had a GIANT problem?
- Weave in creative elements. The winner used lines like, “I used my ability to respond — my response-ability.”
